A historic seawater bathing pool that fills on the high tide and retains water as the surrounding sea recedes. It provides swimming through the lower tide, with terraces, changing facilities and a separate children’s pool.

These predictions use St Helier, Jersey’s standard reference port. Local timing and conditions at Havre des Pas Bathing Pool can vary slightly with weather and coastal geography. Times are shown in local Jersey time.
Havre des Pas Lido is a historic seawater bathing complex built into the intertidal shore. It includes a main retained-water pool, surrounding terraces and a smaller children’s pool.
The pool fills or is replenished when the incoming sea reaches it. As the tide falls away from the structure, seawater remains enclosed, allowing swimming when the natural shoreline is far from the promenade.
The complex developed from facilities created by the Jersey Swimming Club, which was formed in 1865, and Jersey Heritage records that the pool provided a dedicated place for lessons, competitions and gala events. It is a tidal seawater pool, not a freshwater pool and not simply an enclosed section of beach.
When the surrounding tide is low, the Lido operates as a clearly defined retained-water pool, its walls separating it from the uncovered beach and rocky shore.
As the sea rises, it reaches and eventually overtops parts of the pool structure. The enclosed water is refreshed and the distinction between pool and open sea becomes less obvious. Around high water the outer walls may be submerged, waves may cross the pool, the water may move more than at low tide, steps and edges become less visually obvious, and causeway access may be affected.
High tide does not necessarily provide the calmest Lido conditions. The most contained swimming experience is often after the surrounding sea has dropped below the walls.
The Lido offers retained seawater swimming across much more of the tidal cycle than the adjoining natural beach. The central pool includes deeper water and is not only for casual paddling; swimming ability remains relevant even where attendants are present.
There is a platform within the main swimming area, but do not jump or dive unless current on-site rules explicitly permit it.
Users should consider:
A separate smaller children’s pool is provided within the complex, giving younger visitors a more contained area than the main pool. It is not unsupervised or risk-free, and its water level and condition may vary with the tide, cleaning and current management. Adults remain responsible for supervising children and should check the pool’s current depth and condition before use.
The Lido is used throughout the year by local sea swimmers, including during winter. This is an established use rather than a recommendation that cold-water swimming suits everyone: the water is unheated and seasonal lifeguard cover should not be assumed.
Published visitor information describes seasonal resident lifeguards at the Lido, historically from late May into early September. However, a new operator assumed responsibility for the pool, café and public facilities under arrangements beginning in 2026, so seasonal staffing and opening should be taken from a current notice. Seasonal supervision may operate — check the current Lido notice for today’s hours and lifeguard cover. Do not assume year-round lifeguard cover.
The Lido is reached from the Havre des Pas promenade by a walkway or causeway, and access to the terraces is much firmer than the surrounding natural beach. Within the complex there are steps into the pool, handrails, wet and potentially slippery terraces, changing tidal levels and causeway access affected by high water. The promenade itself offers comparatively level access from the town side.
Because operation changed in 2026, not every facility is guaranteed open whenever the pool is physically accessible. The complex has historically included:
Tides. Tide predictions are forecasts. Actual sea level is affected by atmospheric pressure, wind and waves. Always observe the sea and your surroundings.
Swimming. Sea swimming carries risks: currents, waves, rocks, submerged structures, boats and cold water. This page is for planning and does not confirm conditions are safe. Do not assume the beach is lifeguarded.
Facilities. Facilities and café opening hours change seasonally. Check directly before making a journey specifically to use them.
